Designing with light
Modular lighting with polycarbonate offers new options for interiors
Architects and designers use light, color and video to transform spaces. Lighting and technology industry veterans at Lellan noticed a need for an easily controllable and modular lighting system that would provide a striking ambiance to interior environments. They set out to create a product that did just that.
The DigitalCanvas™ from Lellan offers an artistic lighting element to residential and commercial
spaces by using LEDs to broadcast dynamic color, light, motion and interactivity. The building block of the DigitalCanvas™ system is the SmartTile, which can be configured to create any size DigitalCanvas™ consisting of one to 1,000 SmartTiles. The SmartTiles can be laid out in any arrangement, spacing or orientation to broadcast videos with cohesive effect. The DigitalCanvas™ is controlled with any wireless device or PC without the need for complicated control systems or excessive cabling.
The SmartTile features a translucent Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet surface from Covestro LLC. The sheet operates as a diffuser for the LEDs that illuminate the surface. In addition to high light diffusion, polycarbonate sheet offers uniform light transmission and optical clarity.
Each SmartTile measures approximately 11.8” x 11.8” x 1.7”, allowing for easy installation without remodeling or bulky wall reinforcements. This required a lightweight material, like translucent Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet polycarbonate sheet, with LED diffusing capability to minimize hot spotting from pinpoint light.
The polycarbonate sheet also offers superior durability and protection, an important quality when used in retail spaces, corporate lobbies, restaurants, bars, hotels and other spaces frequented by people.
The main properties of Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet are:
- Range of diffusion levels
- Advanced diffusion technology
- Optimized light transmission
- UL-listed flammability rating
- Light weight
- Impact resistant
